In Search Of A Rivalry–Michigan vs MSU Game Thread
October 20th, 2018 by Kindle

There is something different in the air this week. Perhaps it is the cold wind sweeping along the Great Lakes region, bringing freezing temperatures and the depths of fall with it. But there are other forces at work here.

If you have turned up your heater or rewatched Jalen Watts-Jackson run a botched punt into the end zone this week, perhaps you re ready to watch this annual confrontation that MSU has owned in recent years.  (Coach Mark Dantonio is 8-3 versus M, while Michigan has shuffled from Rich Rodriguez to Brady Hoke to Jim Harbaugh.)

Players share pre-game trash talk of field prior to today’s game.

VIDEO: Michigan, MSU players in pregame confrontation via

Michigan says it was told MSU was going to do its walk at 9:50 am. UM players believed they were allowed to take the field at 10 am. Walk was, per U-M’s understanding, late. No one asked them to leave the field apparently.

Michigan knew MSU was going to do its walk. Happens every game. Also saw them coming out of the tunnel. No one moved.

My video of the Michigan incident was shot at 10:02 a.m. MSU was supposed to be on the field at 9:50, but Michigan players already were on the field when I arrived around that time.

Chris Solari~~Michigan RB Karan Higdon was barking at MSU players the entire time as they went back to the locker room. A referee was stationed between him and the roped-off Spartans.

Dantonio says MSU changed players’ numbers during practice this week “just in case anyone was watching. They were jumbled up.”

In our lifetimes there have been many great memories for MSU fans.  Win or lose today, we are likely to have another memory of a lifetime.

Injuries for 2016 & 2018 teams are beyond belief. Transfers of WRs didn’t help this squad either.

I am just a bum and can not comprehend how the HC, co-OC’s bought into this musical chair OL concept. Perhaps if a squad has competent understudies dedicated to one position you allow them to play one other position. Mus does not appear to have that many good 2nd string players at any one position.

No wonder Lewerke got happy feet and lost his confidence and ability to scramble or run.

  • Jeffrey Lubeck writes:

    Wow… Reverse Waterboarding.

Reverse Waterboarding [Sports Version]: You keep thinking you have a chance to live to win the game, when in fact you have absolutely none.

If we can just get a turnover. Oh my gosh we get one. We have a chance don’t we?

If we can just get a trick play or three to work. Oh my gosh we get one. We have a chance don’t we?

If we can just get some bad weather. Oh my gosh we get some. We have a chance don’t we?

If we can just stay close up to late in the game. Oh my gosh we are tied late into the 3rd Quarter?

Oh I forgot this is Reverse Waterboarding for Football.

Three Key Numbers: #1 Time of Possession UofM 41:03 MSU 19:07. #2 Brian Lewerke 5 of 25. #3 Yards Per Rush MSU .7

Biggest Factor: Changing the approach to the game made by the QB. MSU Lewerke: No visible change kept missing almost all targets and complaining about the situation. UofM Patterson: Changed his approach and became a magician with the ball on option plays. Brilliant decisions and even fooled the announcer and camera crew.

No excuses, we got beat by a better team on this day. However, many thanks to our defense. They were under repeated short-field pressure and held on despite having to stay on the turf for an extraordinary amount of time. My hats of the the skunk-bears, they beat us fare and square.

Have returned from the 4 seasons in one at Spartan Stadium. I thought I was watching the movie 300 today. All defense and no offense. The game was characterized by those last 2 words and can be explained by no remaining receivers leading to QB losing his confidence. Perhaps we should switch to some exotic wishbone option offense that does not use receivers, seven big offensive linemen instead. Oh, I forgot. We don’t have 7 offensive lineman. Michigan isn’t a 100% team but 65% beats 50% every time.

An after thought. The decline in Leweke’s performance has been inversely proportional to the increasing expectations and pressure to carry the team. Before the season began he was described as the key to MSU’s success. As linemen and wide receivers went down the pressure ratcheted up and his performance declined, reaching a season low today. In all my years as a Spartan this is the worst offensive performance of them all.

  • GoSt8Go writes:
    October 21st, 20186:56 amat

Our offense was hard to watch. Both teams were hard to watch with the constant penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct and personal fouls. Ugly. I’d like to say we’ll be okay if we could get some of these guys on offense back in the position intended at the start of the season – but that’s been said every game all season. Now the best receiver is gone, and that was very sad to see. Such a brutal game. The offensive performance seems like it goes on everyone, maybe even the students that didn’t show. Lewerke has regressed. Sure, I get that he’s gotta be in a hurry because of protection but even the plays where he’s not in a rush he’s not hitting receivers. They seemed reticent to run him yesterday and maybe a good choice – the way this game was played he may been hurt by a cheap shot. I think we have decent play callers for the type of offense Warner and Bollman want this to be. I don’t think we have good play callers for what this offense is right now. The Skunkbear offense is nowhere close to stunning, yet they’ve made the adjustments now (not true at the start of the year) to make it work.

OSU looked awful. I’ve shared with many that no team can afford to overlook another opponent in this day and age. I think I saw it last night.

As a tad a RABID Acorn fan last night, THAT other team you play each week has players on scholarship, too. PU WAS overlooked and then the Acorns couldn’t flip the switch because they gave PU confidence

Playing sports, any sport, at any time in life is ALL ABOUT CONFIDENCE. Yesterday we had zero, last week we had a ton.

When I post a, for me, lights out round in the low 70’s as I did Friday, it’s all about knowing the putts will go in and the drives will be straight, the shots in between just are what they are and it helps that I know the golf courses – confidence – If only I could instill it in my head every time I play……

It’s just football man. I gotta share. Yesterday was the first time I watched a football game and was sorry I did. Not because of the loss, but how ugly it was watching flag after flag get thrown on the field. Too much BS stupid stuff going on almost all of the time.

I agree on the flags and was going to post a comment but you beat me to it; as I was counting the numbers and needed a few hours to sum the tally.

anyone need any more proof that the NBA is populated with thugs?

    • Jeffrey Lubeck writes:
      October 21st, 20189:08 amat

According to the NBA and the Saudi Crown the incident was not a fight involving thugs. It was a heated argument among America’s wealthiest 1% (maybe even .25%) that included hand gestures and the clearing of throats in order speak their mind – which is their right under the 1st Amendment.

Hey everyone, I went to a boxing match last night and a basketball game broke out.

Kudos to the defense for preventing this offensive embarrassment from evolving into a much more lopsided final score. With the best player now done for the season and without anything resembling a competent O line, any shred of optimism going forward is difficult to imagine. IMO, if the Spartans had an average O line that could adequately pass protect and run block, the story of this team would be totally different, even with all the injuries to receivers. With the beatdown Purdue put on OSU, to say the Boilermakers will be a challenge next Saturday may be an understatement.

I hadn’t thought of that, Ben, you are correct, if we don’t put our big boy pants on, it’ll get embarrassing.

I’d say at least we are in Beast Lansing, but how’d that work out yesterday?

home safe but not sound..SCum fans are out in full force. even followed me to Newark. not much to say about yesterday other than that it was a total quagmire, debacle, disaster.. got home to some e-mails from my brother and other ND fans stating what a total douche harblow is and wondering why we didn’t break bush’s legs. all I can say right now is thanks to the Irish. and I will make this earth shattering statement…when SCum plays PSU, I will be Penn state’s biggest fan!

TUS Intelligence Agencies (i.e., Andary during his off hours) claim Russian interference.

Is this just a small club or a isolated region of the world where in-breeding it difficult to avoid?

      • USMC Retired writes:
        October 21st, 20182:40 pmat

After his complete failure in Detroit, one would have to go with the in-breeding line of thinking; however, the Reds went out of the norm and picked a GM from Seattle (?) as their field boss. So, there maybe less collision than is blatantly obvious.

I enjoyed Winovich for brief moment when he was the lone Wolverine to speak out say how strange it was that minutes before the first game last year no one, including Speight, knew who was going to start. The offense wanted to know, wanted to work together.

Now he’s just a punk li’l sis and kinda reminds of the in “Remember the Titans” before “Sunshine” got his hair cut.

Hey, the Lions actually look pretty good! Sadly, the Spartans do not. 15 yards rushing. 94 total yards on offense. 0-12 on 3rd downs. 18:57 time of possession to 41:03. Happily the score didn’t fully reflect it.
