Sports Saturday on TUS – Mailbag and MSU vs. Oakland Game Thread
December 16th, 2017 by Jeffrey Lubeck

It is Saturday in mid December.  For sports this means the middle section of games acting as preparation for the conference season; except if you are a member of the B1G Conference.  It also means College Football Bowl Games start in earnest!

In honor of Disney having taken the next step in its quest to own and control all programming all the time, I thought I would note that on the TUS Movie Channel Beach Blanket Bingo is playing at 6PM tonight.  The movie stars Rick Pitino (as Frankie Avelon) and Annette Funicello.  The fun and frolicking of this start-studded- flick, starts in the dorms at the University of Louisville before moving to the beach scenes.

Mailbag

Q “Can we get any lower in the barrel with announcers Clay Matvick and Brook Weisbrod calling the game?” – from Tommy H in Florida.  At first glance likely not.  However if I remember correctly these two called the game last year and were hot as bad as you fear.  Matvick and Weisbrod are not new to calling games, but both have bumped around quite a bit and worked on almost every sports network.  If I were to pull a Marine I would label them as “Utility 2x.”

Q “Why did I not get a bigger role in the movie Beach Blanket Bingo?” –  from Ben Green.  You bumped up against the Dixon Line and “could not go north” so-to-speak.

Q “Why does Ricky P. get all the spicy and saucy gigs?” – from an Irish Lad.  It is the hair!

Go Green!

    Mailbag continued:

**From Tom H in FLA–Is that a 30 gallon or 55 gallon barrel? And can we refer to the lady announcer as “Babbling Brooke?

**From NFR in MI–What is the Marine’s favorite emoji, and is it suitable for family viewing?

**From Ghost of Biggie in Manton—Has GoSt8Go ever said, “I’m calling it!”

**From Dr Muffin in ER—Is Jim Harbaugh fit to clean the toilets at the Mesh Gallery or Lubeck Library?

The great Dr. M is fit to do anything he so pleases! As for Jimmy H. I am not sure, and besides the Gallery is not in Mississippi.

Why would “T.H.” be asking about a question that he himself posed? That’s your* shtick!

    That’s so cute, Jeff…

As a side note, watching the NCAA Volleyballers on Thursday UNL, vs. PSU, I was struck by how excellent Karch Kiraly and Paul Sunderland were… they were simply outstanding. They knew the teams well, stuck to the game, discussed match ups and players and were just really intelligent. The Marine should watch it just so he can appreciate two consummate professionals doing it right.

    * I have been told that Little Caesars Arena is all it is cracked up to be for spectators in person. (It helped that the gal that said so was at the Wings’ revenge game vs. Calgary.)

    * A brisk game so far. Vegas implied an ultimate 84-65 Spartan win; I find that plausible at this point. The Grizzlies have nine fouls to the Spartans’ two so far.

Still, I am surprised there is no complaining about the officiating by those Suspects that are not watching The Nutcracker live… 😛

Also, Oakland has eight offensive rebounds

Back from the Forced march – 568mi in 9h45min – many many Canadians coming south

Observations only for stats – lost the T/O battle 17/14, F/T shooting is back in the 0.60’s I agree with NFR smarter brother’s rational about NOT blowing out local teams. As Robin Williams says about golf and the reason for putting a flag on the green, “Just to give ’em frakking HOPE!”

Below is the reason for my forced march (I have golf tomorrow and then Monday playing TPC Sawgrass) to my Grands PROFESSIONAL debut and watch her Mom be the best Party Lady ever, on 30 minutes notice (double click and it will be big enough and properly oriented)

I think so, unless it is his youngest. Regardless, she appears to be wearing a blue dress that is of the same material of the suit Tom wore on his first lunch meeting with Dan Dakich (in Ann Arbor) to go over how to deliver sports color commentary on TV. Dakich wore a Maize colored suit. I could be mistaken, but I am told by Highly Placed sources Dakich invited TH to Crisler Area for the game call afterward.

And I refused the invitation, after the grueling meeting, he not only asked me to come help with the days game, but offered comped Net Jet to all Big Ten games he would be doing and a lifetime pass to Valhala – I told him I’d didn’t fly in others’ airplanes more than is necessary and Valhala was too tricked up to be a fun course to play for seniors – did counter offer with a free motor home every year and membership at the Valley Club, but he couldn’t arrange either. (I know, I know we’ve already established what I am and are just negotiating the price

And I see you have NOT delved into why the pictures of my dancing queens makes my forced march to Columbia fake news

NE took the NCAA Women’s volleyball title over Florida (3-1). The Cornhuskers won 19 straight matches at the end of the season to earn its 5th National Title. NE beat #1 Penn State in the National Semi-Final – who beat the #12 Spartans in the Elite Eight.

The B1G owns the court in WVB. It also can stand tall for the story below.

    From NCAA—–

Penn State middle blocker Haleigh Washington has been selected as the 2017 Senior CLASS Award® winner in NCAA® Division I women’s volleyball. The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I volleyball coaches, national volleyball media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I volleyball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Washington is the fifth Senior CLASS Award winner from Penn State, making Penn State the school with the second-most winners in award history behind Duke, which has six.

How about those Nebraska VB fans turning out in HUGE numbers?

Town bars in every little Nebraska town across the state held watch parties the entire tournament (the Nebraska PBS station carried them all.)

MSU has allowed nearly half of its foes to score at least ten three-point shots on it (a good reason to limit turnovers?). Also (not quoted therein), one factor for Goins’ substitution after halftime was Ward’s free-throw misses. Still, Izzo raved about Ward keeping the team afloat in the first half; Goins & Nairn after halftime; and Winston to put it away.

MSU hosts the Houston Baptist Huskies tomorrow [6 EST, BTN].

    * From twitter.com/MSU_WBasketball, yesterday:
“SPARTANS WIN!!! MSU earns the OT win over ETSU 83-74 behind a double-double from McCutcheon and a team-record 15 blocks”

    * MSU Hockey beat an Olympic under-18 team yesterday 3-0 — ending the pre-January phase of its campaign.

    * Except for zero backups at center, this looks great for football:

TPC Sawgrass is a VERY Very hard golf course folks, even from 6200 yards stayed dry on the only hole that really means anything (If you remember where Fowler hit it when he won, me too, to a back pin) Score was respectable (won the $$$ for low net, but it’s a hard course, people with higher handicaps stepped on the 2 actual birdies I had, so no skins)
