MSU versus Bowling Green – Game Thread
September 2nd, 2017 by Jeffrey Lubeck

Michigan State takes on Bowling Green in College Football at 1PM (EDT).

The level of energy on TUS is about the lowest ever.  The fact that pre-game reports, prognostication and, analysis are absent are solid indicators.

With a litany of question marks following a stupefying 2016 season, MSU Football under the Dantonio Administration is in what seems to be un-chartered territory.

Give us your prediction for today’s game.

My guess is that MSU wins by 17-24 points.

If I based my guess on Dantonio’s WJR pre-game interview, it wouldd be MSU 49- 14.

Since Coach D’s energy and confidence flowing on air doesn’t count, I’d say MSU by 22.

I think it’s a romp and Coach D let’s it go as much as they can generate to exorcise the ’16 demons

I’m here. had a restless night with nightmares of Clarence underwood and still thinking of JUD….I say MSU 27 BGSU 17.

Well that auspicious start just went the wrong way. #14 has more tackles than completions

  • Jeffrey Lubeck writes:
    September 2nd, 201710:14 amat

Very rough around the edges. However, there appear to at-least be some edges to MSU.

  • USMC Retired writes:

So let’s follow the other ‘football schools’ in trailing early and then running it up.

    • JustABum writes:
      September 2nd, 201710:34 amat

Really rough edges, 2 TO’s iin the 1st half.

  • USMC Retired writes:

    Deja vu all over again

  • USMC Retired writes:

Could #21 be any more wide open? (Chandler Bing voice)

  • USMC Retired writes:
    September 2nd, 201710:38 amat

BigTen refs are on there game as usual – OBVIOUS Face mask that was missed – gonna be a long season with this crew of zebras

  • USMC Retired writes:
    September 2nd, 201710:41 amat

So, the 1st period is in the books and Spartans have 1 completion and 2 turnovers

  • JerseyJohn writes:

    way to go madre!

  • JustABum writes:
    September 2nd, 201710:54 amat

1st TD of the season … big hole and our RB holds on to the ball which is progress, that’s nice.

  • Jeffrey Lubeck writes:

    Shuttle Pass? Wounded Duck Pitch?

  • JerseyJohn writes:

    put madre back in!

why don’t punters kick to the sideline anymore?

  • USMC Retired writes:
    September 2nd, 201711:14 amat

OK so is Texas that bad or is Md that undervalued? This was supposed to be a blow-out in the other direction – Md up 27-7 1st half.

  • USMC Retired writes:
    September 2nd, 201711:26 amat

The folks in the booth have certainly been telling me what I already new –

This is a VERY bad group of refs, IMHO.

    • JerseyJohn writes:

my wife just said, “first half of first game and I already hate refs.”

  • USMC Retired writes:

OK, so, maybe there was some early jitters by #14; the line, however needs to start dominating

    • JustABum writes:
      September 2nd, 201711:41 amat

It appears the 1st half play calling was all about the run to gel an Oline which certainly didn’t help L.J. Scott’s YPC average.

Lewerke’s 13/17 ain’t bad. Id’ take that % all season long. The scary thing with F. Davis TD is the ball was near the turf with a 5’7″ DB covering a 6’4″ WR…. Hmmm. The 2nd half will be much better and my 22pt advantage is a winner.

  • Ben Green writes:
    September 2nd, 201711:51 amat

The halftime score may not be impressive but the stats are. Lewerke 13/17 for 130 yards. 267 total yards for the Spartans to 104 for BG. Time of possession 20:40 vs. 9:20.

    Catching up:

    twitter.com/chrissolari”
“Of-note players not dressed today for MSU: S Jalen Watts-Jackson, OL AJ Arcuri, OL Mustafa Khaleefah, OL Matt Carrick, TE Hussein Kadry.”

Holmes & Bachie are the game captains. Going on O first consistent with a young team and/or Coach D’s greater confidence in the O going in to the game.

    twitter.com/chrissolari
“Another new name has popped up on MSU’s roster: FB Ben Line. Grad transfer from Robert Morris, brother of last year’s FB Prescott Line.”

I liked the option, but MSU’s secondary is going to be shredded by an accurate QB. Still, MSU is on pace to meet or exceed my 35-20 projection midpoint owing to BGSU’s inability to control the ball and score.

    Off-topic note, from twitter.com/chicagobulls:
“#Bulls name Shawn Respert as Director of Player Development…”

Really like that Lewerke is willing to take off and run to keep a play alive. Well remember when CC would do this as a sophomore. That will pay dividends down the road to keep B1G defenses honest.

  • GoSt8Go writes:

Tyson Smith! Watching his teammates gather to him as he came off the field was….amazing, wonderful, etc. Many times things don’t work out for young men that experienced what he has.

…and sometimes they work out in tremendously. Hope he can keep this going.

  • USMC Retired writes:
    September 2nd, 201712:38 pmat

Once again the refs on the field do NOT know what they are doing (and the same can be said of the booth) – gad zooks, Batman, but they are TERRIBLE (or course #4 should be securing the ball a tad better)

Announcers berating #4, but to me it’s more the play calling by Warner than it is Scott.

    • JustABum writes:
      September 2nd, 201712:42 pmat

Sure looked like his knee was down from a couple of angles. Does the B1G video replay booth use the network feeds?

Not sure what else they would have, this isn’t the NFL (although the NC$$ would like you to think it is)

It’s just lousy officiating in the Big Ten.

  • JerseyJohn writes:

LJ Scott is a serious liability.

    • USMC Retired writes:

According to Solari, nine true freshmen have already played. Some definitely appear to be contributors.

    • USMC Retired writes:
      September 2nd, 20171:00 pmat

Again, the Beat typer and his slurs – All he had to say was who’s contributed as football players, but that toad has to point out that they are Freshman. As I’ve said, guy can play, guy can play no matter his age the beat typer needs to let it rest, he is NOT making any friends among the players which makes his job more difficult than he has already made it by sucking up to the #BlueWall.

        Here is the Tweet, verbatim:
“Now 9 freshmen in for MSU with WR Laress Nelson getting fourth-quarter action. Equals total true freshmen Spartans played all of last season.”

I cannot for the life of me see how this is a slur.

I hope Terry has a memorable senior year. That last pass, for me, is a small representation of his career. Wide open receiver, lineman bats it done. Nothing quite works out. Then I’m reminded of the @ OSU game and he and O’Connor were as stable as they could be (mostly).

We got beaten pretty badly in their football stadium one time, I’ve forgotten the final (by 8 or 9), so this is even more satisfying to me. (I have to remember that game every time I travel either North or South, so it’s hard to let it go)

Well looks like a typical vanilla first game for the Spartans.

My son Aaron who works at TPT, sent me this article. You all will be happy to hear that he regularly wears The Only Colors at work.

    https://www.theplayerstribune.com/armanti-edwards-dear-app-state/

The best quote: “I still remember our first walkthrough at Michigan Stadium.

For me, personally, I thought that place was going to be much bigger than it was — considering how many fans it holds. It’s all bleachers, though, so I think they kind of just squeeze people as close to each other as they possibly can.”

    LOL

Also, got a hearty Go Green from a dude riding his bike in Rockport, MA yesterday while wearing one of my Spartan hoodies. Not a common occurrence in my neck of the woods so that was fun. (And yes, I did recover from the shock of it quickly enough to yell back “Go White!”)

  • USMC Retired writes:

Cool article! I agree with the flavor of the play calling with the one exception of the SoL that did’t work.

When you hear a Go Green and you are not used to it, it’s hard to give the proper immediate reply – well, played Boston, well played!

Gad, but the guy who’s supposed to be a QB guru has a QB who’s thrown TWO(2) pick 6’s in the 1st quarter

The trouble with Paris losing to the Croc’s is they’re letting down the side; but I’m sure I can put up with that lapse

I was alarmed with the Spartans after the Furman game. I do not think we can say how well this team will do, but I am certainly not alarmed with them now. I am pleased with the final score: This was a comfortable blowout, but not so much of a mismatch on the scoreboard* that the young players will expect to just roll over the Broncos next week. Even the freshmen should recognize, without the coaches’ admonishments, that they have a collection of things upon which they need to improve.

*Yes, I am aware that by yardage and time of possession it was not as close a game as 35-10 implies.

Solari’s grades are not too far off:

The article says that this is Liberty’s final FCS season. In any case (and regardless of Baylor’s off-the-field troubles), this is a stunning loss for a near-elite program.

      • GoSt8Go writes:

I think you are right. They are just starting to play larger programs. Baylor is it for the year and now they’ll be back to playing the smaller programs. They’ve built some unbelievable facilities getting ready for this.

    * Tom Izzo has written a column in the Detroit Free Press about Jud Heathcote:
    http://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/michigan-state/spartans/2017/09/03/tom-izzo-michigan-state-jud-heathcote/621348001/

    * After the game, Tyson Smith described a new celebration protocol: “If anybody makes a big play on the defense, gets a turnover, our team captains come over and we all celebrate together. Cheering is a part of football, cheering each other on. After the play, we’re cheering, we’re cheering. We say, ‘Spartans! Woo! Woo!’ And after the play is over, we put a stick-it on our helmet as an accomplishment.” (Specifically, Chris Frey, as Captain, affixed a sticker to Smith’s helmet after his pick-six INT.)

“That was the first time we did it. We just brought it up about two weeks ago in camp. We said we’re gonna do this – we’re gonna cause a lot of turnovers, and we’re gonna celebrate about it.”

    * The injury report (quoting Solari): “Senior defensive end Demetrius Cooper left the field limping after a play in the second quarter. Right guard David Beedle also left the game in the third quarter with an apparent leg injury. Dantonio did not update either player’s status.”

    * Six true freshmen played on offense, while another three played on defense. This is significant; usually, Dantonio will start a true freshman out on special teams and often withhold him from scrimmage play during his first year. Only one of the nine (Simmons) apparently went in on special teams; he later went in on D and made two tackles.

    * Game stats:

With regard to your ‘that the young players will expect to just roll over the Broncos next week.’

I’d say the ‘Zoo’s showing against the Raincoats will allow the coaches to keep the team focused on the task ahead AND I think the Leadership of this group is far superior than last years – the sticker idea may seem silly, BUT IT’S NOT. Next week will be an interesting test.
