Spartan Sports Updates for mid-May, 2017
May 15th, 2017 by 89 Chemistry

ITEM:  MSU Men’s Golf has teed off in its second consecutive NCAA Regional.   A preview is here, and the leaderboard (which will be occasionally updated) is here:

ITEM:  MSU Track had its best day of the B1G Championships Meet yesterday.   Quoting (with minor editing) from the msuspartans.com release:

“Sophomore Justine Kiprotich captured the first gold medal of the 2017 Big Ten Outdoor Championship by winning the men’s 1,500m.   Kiprotich won his first career Big Ten title with a time of 3:48.72.   He was just shy of his personal best time of 3:42.36 at the Virginia Challenge in April.   The sophomore was a runner-up last season.

“’Justine has turned into one of the best milers in the region, and clearly has a chance to be an NCAA finalist,’  said MSU Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Walt Drenth.   ‘To be a Big Ten champion as a sophomore is amazing.   I am seeing a guy really maturing.   He has a good race savvy.   He made a bold move with about 500 or 600 meters to go to get into running position.   When he got to the front with a little over 200 meters to go, he just powered away from the field.'”

…   “Senior Sherod Hardt had a solid showing in his final Big Ten Championship, finishing third in the men’s 5,000m.   Hardt clocked in with a time of 14:25.10.”

…   “’One of the hallmarks of a really good team is to be good at the end of the meet, in the 4×400 and the 5,000, it is a long weekend.   Some kids have doubled and some kids have waited their turn, but you still have to be mentally tough.   I was really pleased with how Sherod battled through the whole race.   He ran a tough race from start to finish,” Drenth said.'”

NCAA First Round participants will be announced on Thursday.

ITEM:  The newest version of Ralph Young Field — upon which MSU Field Hockey plays — is now being prepared.

ITEM:  MSU Softball was the best B1G team left out of the NCAA Tournament field.   It therefore was the B1G’s automatic qualifier for the inaugural National Invitational Softball Championships (analogous to the NIT, but with 48 teams).   The opening rounds are double-elimination in four-team regionals; MSU plays Murray State tomorrow at 5 PM ET and will play at least once on Wednesday.   The Region 3 winner will advance to a six-team Finals that will begin on Sunday.   The msuspartans.com story is linked here.

ITEM:  The first and second MSU Rowing Varsity Fours both finished fourth in the B1G Championships yesterday.   The NCAA field will be announced late tomorrow afternoon.

ITEM:  MSU Baseball will play at CMU tomorrow [4:05 PM ET] and begin a series at Michigan on Thursday.   Those three games will conclude MSU’s regular season.

ITEM:  The NCAA Women’s Golf National Championships begin Friday.

Go Green!

Through the 1st round, Spartan men are 10 shots back of 6th place(going on the assumption that the top 6 move along).

Good to hear the softballers get some more practice.

MSU Baseball: So far, so good with a 5-0 lead over CMU:

MSU Softball: So far, so good with a 6-1 lead over Murray State:

MSU Men’s Golf: Not so good. The Spartans are almost halfway through the NCAA Regional Tournament and appear in need of some surging to advance either as individuals or as a team:

MSU Crew: Bad. It appears that the Spartans narrowly missed the 11-team at-large-bid cut for the NCAA Championships. I infer this from the inclusion of four at-large B1G selections plus B1G Champ OSU (eleven League Champions got automatic bids) and the sixth-place finish of MSU in the B1G Championships.

Boy one can see why the Dubs got rid of Gasal – he just doesn’t participate

Interesting to see Forbes getting looks and points.

Guess who the stumbling block it to the Spartans-Paris Hilton being a protected rivalry in Basketball? (IU-PU, &Triple Sticks – NWU) You only get 1 guess and he is the stumbling block for anything that does NOT increase his paycheck

Currently, the B1G schedule includes 18 games. A 19-game schedule would enable teams within each Football Division to play one another twice and play all of the remaining teams once. This would guarantee that a four-year player could play every B1G team at least twice at home and twice as a visitor.

A 20-game schedule (which the article says is up for discussion) would allow for the foregoing, plus one cross-Divisional rivalry to be played twice each season. This would not matter for MI-MSU or IL-NW, but would be crucial to make IU-PU happen twice every year. (The conference would probably pair MSU and WI to play twice every year. That, I think, would ensure some eyeballs. #BorderWar )

    * MSU Baseball beat CMU yesterday, 7-0. According to the official MSU release:
Junior center fielder Brandon Hughes broke the Michigan State baseball single-season stolen bases record with his 30th swipe of the season in the Spartans’ 7-0 shutout win over Central Michigan Tuesday at CMU’s Theunissen Stadium.

MSU hosts Michigan tomorrow at 4:05 PM ET. The game will be on BTN.

    * Somehow, MSU Softball lost that big lead it had over Murray State — and the game. It did beat Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis in its first elimination game today, 7-1. According to the official MSU release:
With her four RBI on the day, [Kaitlyn] Eveland esablished a new school single-season record – she now has 57, one more than Lindsey Hansen’s old mark of 56, set in 2011. Meanwhile, [Kristina] Zalewski recorded her 11th career save, good for second all-time in MSU history; the record is 12, held by Erica Strutz (1997-2000).

MSU will face the Illinois State – Murray State loser at 8 PM ET tonight for the right to try to beat that game’s winner in two straight games tomorrow. That game had suffered a rain delay; it is now in the 6th inning, but I cannot tell whether MSU will take the field tonight.

    * NCAA Men’s Golf is brutal: Only five teams advance to the Finals — and only one individual from a non-advancing team moves on.

Spartan Michael Sharp finished the Washington Regional Tournament with a score of 215 [PAR +2]. He tied for 15th place — four strokes behind the individual qualifier.

David Harns‏Verified account @isportsDave earlier today
The Salter brothers (Bloomfield Hills) will play against each other today. Both catchers, Will is an MSU junior & Harrison is a UM freshman.

    David Harns‏Verified account @isportsDave
Their older brother, Blaise, is a Spartan alum (class of 2015) and currently plays minor league ball for the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Their grandfather, Bill Freehan, is a Michigan alum and played catcher/1B for the Detroit Tigers – and was also head coach at Michigan.

    * I have not read the article in full, but it probably explains why promising young Spartan Tyson Smith was not participating more last season and during spring:
    http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2017/05/michigan_state_cornerback_tyso.html#incart_river_index

    * MSU hockey announced Mason Appleton as its team captain — and Carson Gatt, Brennan Sanford, & Sam Saliba as assistant captains — for the upcoming season.

    * MSU Softball took its Region 3 competitors to the very end today. It first avenged its Tuesday loss to Murray State by beating the Racers with a 10-6 score. It then took the first game against host ILSU, 4-3, before losing the Championship Game, 5-0.

    * About 20 Spartans will participate in the NCAA Track & Field Preliminaries next week.

    * The NCAA Women’s Golf National Championships begin tomorrow — ANNND

    * MSU Baseball just beat the Gulos, 6-1!! The series resumes in Ann Arbor tomorrow at 6 PM ET, then concludes Saturday in E.L. @ 1:05 PM ET [BTN}. GO GREEN!!!
