Spartan Surge – 2018 Women’s B1G Golf Championship: Round 2
April 22nd, 2017 by Jeffrey Lubeck

Sarah Burnham

Spartan Sarah Burnham (JR) shot a scintillating -9 PAR 63 on Saturday to lead a surging MSU at the 2017 the B1G women’s Golf Championships on the TPC River’s Bend course in Maineville Ohio.  Burnham’s 2nd round result is the lowest single round score in B1G Women’s Championship and MSU team history. After two rounds Sarah sits at -8 PAR (136) which provides her with a 4 shot lead over Elodie Van Dievoet of Michigan and Emie Peronnin of Minnesota heading into Sunday’s Final Round.

MSU shot a combined -5 PAR (283) to vault into 2nd place behind #12 Northwestern who retained its 1st place standing by shooting a combined -3 PAR (285). The Spartans and Wildcats have three players each in the Top 10 Leader-board heading into the 3rd Round.  The Spartans (+5 PAR) are 8 strokes behind the Wildcats (-3 PAR).

Burnham was not the only Spartan to experience good fortune on Saturday as five of the six team members equaled or improved on their results from Friday’s opening round.  Freshman, and the state of Michigan’s perennial top female amateur golfer; Allyson Geer replicated Friday’s score and stands in 9th place overall.  RS Sophomore Katie Sharp improved three strokes from Friday’s round to shoot an EVEN PAR (72).  Sharp stands in 10 place overall.  Paz Marfa, the Freshman from Barcelona, Spain is in 21st.  Sophomore Carolyn Markley, who hails from the host city of the tournament is in 41st place and RS Freshman Logan Otter improved six strokes from Friday’s round and is in 75th place.

      They will need it.

Northwestern is playing exceptionally well at the moment. However, MSU simply needs to play within itself and the Title could be theirs. They accomplished the same last weekend.

MSU cuts Northwestern’s lead in half – 4 strokes – in the middle holes of the front nine.

Burnham -1 for the day (-9 overall).

MSU (-5 for day so far) takes the lead over Northwestern (+4 for day so far) by a stroke (E vs. +1). Both teams on holes 11-14.

Burnham (+2 for day) even with Michigan’s Elodie Van Dievoet (-2 for day) at -6. Van Dievoet is playing one-hole ahead of Burnham.

Some terrific Posts since Friday, Jeff!

    * MSU took two of three from 25th-ranked Buckeye Softball this weekend. Softball will have a pair of 4 PM (ET) games mid-week; it hosts EMU on Tuesday and goes to CMU on Wednesday.

    * MSU Baseball appears to be snake-bitten. It lost at Maryland Friday, 12-2. Saturday’s game was rained out. Apparently the Sunday double-header did not start at 10:00 ET as planned, but the 2:00 game has the Spartans down 6-1 in the bottom of the 7th inning. (I do not know whether they will complete the three-game series today or not.)

Weather permitting, MSU will be back home Wednesday to host Toledo [3:05 ET].

    * MSU Rowing took four of six Saturday in Cambridge, MA against Northeastern (and Boston U & UMass):

No word yet on how MSU fared today vs. Harvard/Radcliffe and Boston College.

    * With a win at NW today, MSU Women’s Tennis would finish the B1G season tied for third with the 36th-ranked Wildcats. Since, however, MSU lost to IL on Senior Day, I have to think MSU will finish tied for 4th with the Illini.

This link claims to furnish live results in Evanston, but appears tardy:

After some digging, I found that MSU-MD did indeed play its morning game today. MSU lost it, 2-1.

Off-topic: DE Auston Robinson, ICYMI, was dismissed from the football team. (He is still a student @ MSU.) On Friday night, Meridian Township Police asked the public for information on his whereabouts. He was taken into custody this morning.
