Mixed Bag Saturday Thread: Spring Game to Final Four
April 1st, 2017 by Jeffrey Lubeck

Saturday April 1st,  2017.  Is it time for April Fools pranks?  Not on this post, as there is way too much going on in TUSland.

  1.  No Joke, the empire known at UConn Women is over.  The streak of 110 games and 4 straight National Titles is caput.  Read [here].  12 Months and five days after losing by 60 points to UConn (in the 2016 Sweet 16) Mississippi State made up all those points, plus 2 more to dethrone the national champs in the 2017 Women’s Final Four game on Friday night.
  2. After 12 practices in a less than upbeat light hearted environment the Michigan State University football team conducts its Spring football game.  Gametime is 3PM (EDT) and the event is open to the public and will be broadcast on BTN.  The game is to be conducted almost a month earlier than normal. The normally quiet and close-to-the-vest Head coach Mark Dantonio has been almost silent.  Given the criminal investigations (and subsequent suspensions) of MSU football players and staff all following a 3-9 season a cloud hangs over MSU.
  3. Down the street and starting 5 minutes later positive vibes are likely reverberate as the Spartan baseball team (15-6 3-0) takes on highly regarded Minnesota (15-8 3-0) on Kobs Field at McLane Stadium.  The game (3:05 PM EDT) is available on TV at BTNToGo and radio on SpartanSportsNetwork.  More information is [here]
  4. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four resumes with the two National Semi-Final contests (CBS). #7 South Carolina vs. #1 Gonzaga tips off at 6:09 PM EDT. Approximately 30 after the end of the first game #3 Oregon takes on #1 North Carolina (eta 8:49 PM EDT).
  5. If the South Carolina Men’s team (a 7.5 point underdog) can win today; both the Men’s and Women’s squad will play in the National Title. In comments on previous posts Intrepid reporter USMC(retired) indicated there was bedlam in Columbia S.C. Oh, and to think it is has been 12 years since East Lansing experienced the same.
  6. The Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball finish their spring training season today in Miami FLA against the Marlins.  The past 10 seasons have been heady ones for the Tigers and their fans (of which Linda, Jeff, Kyle, Shae dog, Merry [Christmas] dog count as 5).  Those days seem to moving the status as “the past”.  However, at least Justin Verlander has returned to top form and life with Kate Upton is a “Perfect fit.”  See [here].
  7. No need to mention details about the Pistons or the Red Wings as that is too much negative ju-ju in one post.
  8. I think I now know how Eyeore feels after completing a post or comment.
  9. Wait, wait, wait-a-moment!  Norkfork Rancher is doing something very cool. NFR is deep into researching/experiencing family roots this very day. I know it is non-sports related and in most respects a somber event… but would it be okay with TUS Membership for NFR (if willing) to post a story about it?

Spartan baseball team trails 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning of the first game of a double-header, due to yesterday’s rainout. Starting pitcher Alex Troop has allowed only three hits and struck out 8, but has walked 4. No home runs in the game thus far.

Bummer… MSU threatens in 9th. But Minny Closer Brian Glowicki strikes out MSU big bats Kelly and Troop leaving Chmeileski stranded at 2nd.

So the SEC is now a Basketball Conference, no longer a football conference. My Ballet teaching daughter who is only a fan of football when it is in person, is absolutely bat$hit about basketball, now.

I am posting the words an music to the Prosecutors office: “Scott Hughes, spokesman for the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office, said no decision will be made this week on whether charges will be filed in the case and that a determination is not imminent.”

IMHO, Coach Dantonio is handling this whole situation correctly

I agree with your position from two perspectives. 1.) Don’t be sell’n or litigt’n in the press on a matter like this – almost always proves to be way, way more hurtful than helpful. 2.) Extremely consistent with Coach D’s demeanor and style.

Keeping with the Japanese line of thinking, Linda and I watched Silence last night. Pretty intense. It appears Japanese interrogation and the hearing process of the 16th century did not get bogged down arriving at a decision.

One can never really understand a people who WORSHIP a person and put monumental importance on “looking good around the field’.

The Tigers: They whittled their roster to 25 players on Friday, placing outfielder J.D. Martinez on the 10-day disabled list with a right midfoot sprain, outrighting Steven Moya to Triple-A Toledo and offering Rule 5 Draft pick Daniel Stumpf back to the Royals.

Moya may eventually learn how to hit, but not this year

      deWeaver is reported as injured.
Terry is reported as injured but is dressed and on the sideline with headset.

At this point it would be appropriate to report which players are neither dressed nor on the sideline.

He wanted to waylay the media’s “how can the situation be important to you if your having a spring game”?

2 days after an F-4 went missing out over the Pacific, the squadron was scheduled to have an all hands picnic. We had it, It wasn’t that the CO (who became Head of Manned Space Flight for NASA) didn’t think the deaths were important, he thought the work that had gone into picnic by the Marines and wives was more important. The widow and children of the pilot came and she was very grateful. The RIO, wasn’t married.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that insight. Having never been in a job where life/death/fighting/defending your country is in the job description it is great to learn from someone who has.

Offense (in Green): 17 Defense (in White): 15 HALF

    Observations

I like the offense vs. defense configuration.
Tristen Jackson WR – So. West Bloomfield MI – is playing exceedingly well.
    Kicking game looks good.
London shows he has breakaway spread.
Dantonio sticking to careful wording with announcers.
Defense holding run game in check for most part.

    Defense 30 Offense 23 – FINAL

    Observations

Surprisingly clean game – in terms of lack of penalties and lack stoppage via override by coaches because of complete screwups.
Jackson (So.) @WR superb – great awareness and savvy. Outstanding game. If this game is an indicator Jackson is a game changer
Rison (F) @WR very good – nice route running. Coach D. in after game press conference says Rison will play as freshman.
Lane (So) @RB @WR @CB – great presence on both sides of ball.
Gaines (RS So) @CB @WR – another two-way player that has solid impact.
Scott (F) @CB – excellent game for freshman. Coach D. in after game press conference says Scott will likely start as freshman, “Which is uncommon for us.”
Brain Lewerke (RS So.). Looks complete recovered from broken leg. Actually ran some. Cool under pressure and arm strong as ever. Ball sailed a bit leading to 2 INT.
Holmes and London at RB decent to good as usual.

L.J. Scott did not play and said after game “I am not suspended.” Coach D. was asked about this statement after game. My only comment is this: “L.J. had surgery after the season and the plan is to not practice or play him this spring.”

Ghosh I’m stiff. First 10K (first race ever) on Monument Ave (that finishes near the Stonewall Jackson Monument with his horses arse pointing North). Stellar day focused on Coach Lubeck’s Zen stride technique, relaxing with I Believeore’s Pikesville Straight Rye and about to fall asleep. Wishing Spartan Baseball was on the other end of these 1 run games….sigh.

Must have been in a hurry to see that horses ARSE, otherwise why run so far? Walking listening to the Marine Corps, Brotherhood of War, OSS, (Europe & SA), PPD, and new CIA novel(WEB Griffin III), now that’s enjoyable. The best one though was Cryptonomicon, a 1999 novel Neal Stephenson, a fictionalization of Bletchley Park >1000 pages and >month to hear it all. Much better for the knees as one ages, much better.

All that said, doing a 10k is a monumental task and a wonderful accomplishment. I did it once in formation with 42 others with a jodi call and the only reason why is because I had no other choice.

I lived in Alexandria, VA for 15 years. The last 4 south of Old Town in Mt. Vernon on land previously owned by our first President. I passed 1 statute before I got to the Potomac everyday on Washington St. in Alex. A Civil War soldier holding his hat with hand to head (bowed) facing south with his rear facing north. It marked the spot from which Alexandria’s company left to join the army…..the Confederate army.
