A Bit of Old and New – TUS
February 19th, 2017 by Jeffrey Lubeck

Hopefully our move to the new hosting facility will allow TUS to keep the best of the old and combine it with a newer, faster, better world.  Remember I said – hopefully.

    Trying to please everyone, usually fails – including pleasing yourself.

      While doing this stuff today, my IPhone fell into my cup of coffee – died. Luckily (like the backups we have for this site), I have “No questions asked” insurance on the phone. So a replacement is on the way. The dead phone lasted me almost two years. The one it replaced resides somewhere on the trailess Pinchot Creek Region of the Sawtooth Wilderness – lost on a photoshoot. The one lost on Pinchot Creek replaced one lost on Lubeck Ridge – lost on a photoshoot.

    My first post on the new site is one of preparation. Like an athlete trains for the Olympics, or Lubeck trains for the hike into the trailess Pinchot Creek Region of the Sawtooth Wilderness, I have been training myself to handle the disappointment of Izzo’s squad missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 19 years. When I try and find a path for them to get a 10 seed I feel delusional.

    Biggest problem is guard play. I used to think our deficiencies were injuries to big men and lack of an inside game. Not even close. It’s all about guard play. If Tum is on the floor the offense struggles. If Winston is on the floor he can’t guard anyone and we are not good enough to overcome him getting beat repeatedly.

    I was hoping you guys saw it differently. The problem is 2016 was just a very tough year for MSU sports. The Football team getting smacked down by Alabama, then going 3-9. That was followed up by Izzo’s 2nd seeded team that everyone was picking to win it all getting bounced by a 15 seed.

    What’s worse is this year is not starting off much better. The pending indictment’s and missing the NCAAs is just not the start I was looking for to turn things around.

    Here is the 60 Minutes thirteen minute piece on Dr. Nassar aired on CBS earlier tonight~~~

    Be sure to stay with it well past the initial 13 minute piece and let the 60 Minutes “OVERTIME” pieces play as well.

    Jankoska scored 28 as the Ladies beat Paris Hilton today by 20 (PS they were ranked #20, too)

  • JustABum writes:

    A tough weekend for MSU ended of two good notes, Jankoski lead the ladies to victory and … from what I have read … CBS’s 60 minutes focused on Nassar’s USA Gymnastics long running sick actions. The national TV program puts the Nassar crimes in the proper context, MSU is just one facet of a sick man’s predatory fields.

    On a good note, I enjoyed my first Guinness in months after shooting a 78 at a new golf club, and I miss my occasional pint of Guinness.

      Congratulations on the score and securing a fine beverage to celebrate said score.

      I look forward to playing as soon as the 6 feet of snow – currently deposited on the course – finds a new location. I have played as early as the last week of March in the fifteen years of residence at The Valley Club. Unless there is a big-time heat wave – which is not all the uncommon – the sticks being used on the natural turf here could be delayed until May.

        Thank you. After 15 years of Irish weather we’d gladly welcome a change.of one good winter of sub freezing temps with manageable snowfall.

        I hope the spring skiing makes the long winter worth it.

        Bridges is a marvel and entertaining to watch. MSU’s infirmary and his ankle sprain will assuredly influence his decision to be a lottery pick. Especially after Erin Harris told his boys not to take anything for granted on Saturday.

    I have accumulated several bullet points since the last time I could Comment on TUS:

    * Last month, former long snapper Taybor Pepper signed a “futures” contract with Green Bay. He has a chance to start this fall, as the Packers’ LS is a free agent.

    * Gideon Smith is hardly MSU Football’s only significant contribution to Black History. Da Bears have saluted another Spartan emeritus:
    http://www.chicagobears.com/news/article-1/Thrower-made-history-in-Bears-debut/917a79c7-a962-4140-8669-e97aaa8a46fe

    * The National Football Foundation’s Michigan chapter is renaming an award for Mike Sadler. The award, given to the state’s top Division I college football scholar-athlete, had been known as the John S. Pingel Award, named after another former Michigan State football player. Sadler won the award in 2012 and 2014.

    * Still recognized as an East Lansing institution:
    http://www.theonlycolors.com/2017/2/21/14678804/the-spartans-crunchys-lands-itself-in-the-top-51-college-bars-of-america

    * As if MSU needs more embarrassments! This guy needs to spent a little of his time and money during the off-season to prove this bit of common knowledge for himself:
    https://www.landof10.com/michigan-state/draymond-green-shape-earth-may-flat

    * MSU Hockey hosts PSU this weekend.

    No comment.

    * Dan Durkin won this week’s B1G Baseball Player of the Week award, and Tori Jankoska won PotW for WBB.

    I think MSU WBB will win its games against PSU (tomorrow, 7 PM ET, BTN Plus) and at NE (Sunday, 2 PM ET, BTN??) to finish the season on a four-game winning streak and earn the 4th seed in the B1G Tournament. Since they would probably play Indiana in Indianapolis after a double bye, I expect a 20-10 finish. That should be good enough for a NCAAT bid.

    * Izzo said that Harris has to keep his right knee perfectly straight for at least 3 weeks
    before surgery can be performed. Izzo thinks that Ellis and/or McQuaid will have to step up for Harris’ absence. (It would be nice if Langford made more progress, too.)

    {Fun Fact: MSU has not, at this time, been mathematically eliminated from winning the 2016-17 B1G regular-season title.}

    I still like MSU’s chances to beat NE and split the WI/@IL games. With those two wins and a B1G Tournament win against an 11-14 seed, the Spartans–with their signature win over Wichita State and three other wins over MN & NW–should continue their NCAAT streak.

    If anyone wants to know why IU loses to Ioway in OT, they have the same lazy passes (like they are just running a drill and Ioway knows whats coming) Oh, and fouls, IU =30(3 have fouled out, Ioway = 21 and yes the refs are typical home court advantage in the B1G) )

  • 89 Chemistry writes:
    February 22nd, 20174:29 pmat

    * Spring football begins Saturday — the earliest start under Dantonio.

    * The remaining MBB schedule:
    R 02/23/17 Nebraska 7:00 p.m. TV: ESPNU
    N 02/26/17 Wisconsin 4:00 p.m. TV: CBS
    W 03/01/17 at Illinois 9:00 p.m. TV: BTN
    S 03/04/17 at Maryland 2:00 p.m. TV: BTN

    With the Terp game moved up, the final three games are each only three days apart.

    Unless MSU loses all of these games, it should secure a first-round bye in the B1G Tournament — giving MSU five days between the Terp game and its nearly must-win game in the B1GT on Thursday, March 9.

    * Well-deserved:
