Travel Ban – Self Imposed?
February 13th, 2017 by Jeffrey Lubeck

Today, Michigan State University’s Athletic Director Mark Hollis cancelled his 12 day 12 State tour to watch basketball games as head of the NCAA Men’s Tournament Selection Committee. Hollis desires to stay in East Lansing to focus on his obligations on campus.

In short, MSU Athletics is in a mess on a number of fronts while under the direction of Mark Hollis.  This is a rather remarkable reversal is standing given MSU’s and Hollis’ rise and standing nationally over the last 20 years.  Under the well mannered, considerate, and many would argue visionary Hollis – MSU has been the darling of college sports in the 21st Century.

So TUS Membership if you were Hollis what would be your next steps?

Mark Hollis is known as a change agent – in terms of college sports events and participation. He is the guy who helped establish and create many of the national caliber events that are now standards. We (aka TUS) have been the direct beneficiary’s.

Mark is known (as told to me by his peers and associates) as a genial and considerate leader who tends to avoid conflict and expects staff to the make the correct choices – including resignation.

My desire is that Mark Hollis demonstrates a level of leadership on the administrative level that equals or betters his work-to-date on sporting events. I believe, Hollis has the acumen and skill to do so. Whether he has the desire, interest (and guts) to do so is another thing entirely.

a bit early in the proceedings to say what hollis should do but it looks like at the very least the gymnastics coach should be history. maybe already a day late and a dollar short.

On a different topic, what is the shortest time between a vote of full confidence by management/owner (of a coach or team executive) and a resignation by the person supposedly supported?

Note: At this time I have full and complete confidence in each of you as functioning members in good standing – for at least the next 30 minutes.

Didn’t you give a full vote of confidence to Network Solutions just last week?

Yes I did. So that puts me at one week on any list we build.

looks like the Sandusky family is up to its old tricks. i’m glad my taxes are still paying dottie jerry’s pension. unfortunately, with the goings on in east lansing about to explode, I may no longer have room to talk about PSU.

getting back to last week. the freep may not totally be fake news but it is certainly peppered with opinions and excuses whenever SCum loses. when we beat them in basketball it was apparently due to the fact that one of their scoreless starters was sick. our hockey win was attributed to their goalie being injured. I guess the rest of the guys on their roster don’t count.

The travel ban most likely is self imposed, Hollis leaving now is unthinkable. TUS members are sharp enough to distinguish the differences between what is occurring at MSU and what happen at PSU, Baylor, Oregon State and the mistakes made by Stoops with Mixon.

Nassar’s long occurring actions and allegations are not wholly MSU’s negligence, The USA Gymnastics Team is also implicated as well as Nassar’s private practice and MSU needs to focus on the MSU’s gymnastics coach’s handling of the complaints and others in the AD dept aware of the complaints. Suspending Klages is the first step. Why MSU’s action came 3 months after MSU fired Nassar and 6 months after the USA Gymnastic’s fired Nassar in August must be explained to illustrate MSU acted responsibly, and if not why. Klages’ actions may absolve MSU from negligence in part or wholly.

The MSU football team’s swift response to a late January assault is the best possible reaction to this horrific incident. The MSU AD Dept acted swiftly in following the Title lX procedural course by hiring an independent investigator, suspending the alleged three “student-athletes” and a MSU football staff member prior to findings being released is unprecedented if I recall.

MSU’s AD depts’ actions may have defused any departmental cover-up talk when it comes to the football team but still has to do to get the truth regarding Nassar. Sandusky was not a doctor and as far as we know local and MSU police are not implicated in allowing Nassar to commit such heinous “treatments” since the mid 1990’s. Finding out how and who else besides Klages covered-up Nassar’s actions should be the focus for MSU

Getting to the bottom of this quickly, with controlled disclosure is in the best interest of MSU students and the school. And that’s the Bum’s two cents to add to this.

        I agree as well.

I heard the gymnastics coach has been placed on administrative leave.

Hollis needs to honestly vet the entire Nassar issue. I hope that he hasn’t been privy to the disgusting accusations early in the process.

Now hearing football coach Curtis Blackwell put on paid leave…

I guess he is a “staffer”, not coach.

The sexual assault investigation involving three MSU football players and a staff member is still ongoing.
The implication here is that Blackwell is that staffer.

  • JerseyJohn writes:

the day Blackwell was hired I predicted that he would have us on probation within 3 years. I also warned that he could be the downfall of dantonio. if that happens I will have no sympathy for dantonio or hollis.

I do not recall that observation from you, but I think you were out of contact with us Hey Joe refugees at the time. Please tell us: What was it in his background or demeanor evoked that dread in you at the time?

I likened his hiring to the same type of skullduggery that Kansas basketball has employed for years. almost like the AAU “middlemen” that izzo has referred to. and while i’m at it here’s another prediction. I fear that we haven’t heard the last from malik McDowell. don’t be surprised if in the future we are implicated in some sort of infraction involving him. the circus that surrounded his recruitment lead me to not trust him or his mother.

    Quick SAT Story Problem.

Two MSU Athletic Department cars are attempting to escape disaster/scandal from East Lansing MI at 120 miles per hour. Car #1 is headed to a position in government in Washington D.C. Car #2 is headed to position in Dam Engineering Testing/Safety in Oroville, CA. Which situation and location is the safest and why?

    a. Athletic Department, East Lansing MI.
    b. Dam Engineering Testing/Safety Oroville CA.
    c. Position in government, Washington D.C.

Nassar is apparently a sick monster. It would seem the suggestion by the teenage girl’s attorney, David Mittleman, that the investigation be turned over to an independent investigator has merit.

she just retired. now she can collect her pension just like jerry Sandusky. and like Sandusky, possibly in jail.

Given the gravity of recent and recently uncovered grievous occurrences I would hope that Mark Hollis and Lou Anna Simon demonstrate the highest level of leadership and integrity. The quick response to the assault involving football players seems proper and justified. On Lou Anna Simon’s MSU Office of the President page is this bold statement. “It’s not just what we do, but why and how we do it, that distinguishes us as Spartans.” And, “I often ask what kind of place the world would create today to confront its modern challenges. Would it be something like MSU”?
